The HCC Board of Deacons oversees many missions both locally and globally. Our largest mission financially is our support of the Homer Youth Center, located in the basement of Jones Hall. The Homer Youth Center is in its eleventh year of operation having opened its doors to the youth of our community in the fall of 2000. The Center continues to offer a safe, supervised place for 6-8th grade students to go after school. There is no other similar program available for youth in the village of Homer or surrounding communities. Over the past year we have served over 100 youth, and our daily average attendance has seen a marked increase in recent months, nearing 20 youth each day.
As a church we also support local missions including Loaves and Fishes, jail ministry, several local food pantries, CROP, Missions of the Heart Kits, Habitat for Humanity, and the Cortland County Council of Churches. On a Global Level through the assistance of our mission out reach program, Global Connectors, and the Dorothy Jane Andrews Fund, we have sponsored mission work such as assisting a Habitat for Humanity project in Honduras and an irrigation project in Guatemala. We have helped sponsor members who participated in UCC youth events in South Africa and have sent workers to New Orleans to assist in rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina.
The Homer Congregational Church is an active supporter of the Our Churches Wider Mission program. We are firm believers in supporting the missions of the UCC through OCWM and our proud of our record of giving to the program. The HCC is also a proud participant in the UCC Five For Five program, donating to the five special offerings during the calendar year.
